Artist Jay Jacobs has an idea or two brewing every minute. Many of those find their way into this world. Some even find their way onto publicly viewable spaces (check out the east wall of The Jessye Norman School of the Arts.) Meet Jay!
1: How did you come to be a member of theClubhou.se?
I joined because I was interested in using the laser cutter.
2: Describe the moment you decided what you wanted to do with your life?
There wasn’t a singular moment. It was more like I was existing in a confluence of what I had to do and what I needed to do and gradually, over time, they became the same thing.
3: What do you do in your current work?
I have been a working artist for 16 years and about to start my third year as the art teacher at Aquinas High School.
4: What is an expertise you have that you would like to share with others?
I don’t know that it is an expertise but I enjoy sharing the process of how to create a narrative that is subtle enough to spark imagination.
5: What are you tinkering with at the moment?
I am in the process of painting a fifteen foot long pentaptych that sequentially illustrates the history of the creative community in Augusta, dating back to the Westo Indians.
6: What are you interested in learning?
The best way to tell a story.
7: What is your favorite sci-fi movie?
Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I love how the aliens chose to implant an image into the minds of creative people that makes them seem crazy to the rest of the world but ultimately leads them to a life changing revelation.
8: If you have not lived all of your life in Augusta, where else have you lived?
Savannah, Ga. Greenville, Sc. Philadelphia, Pa. Brevard, Nc.
9: If you could see one thing happen in Augusta in the next 5 – 10 years, what would it be?
The development of an Arts District. If Augusta had no sales tax on the sale of artwork, gallerists from larger cities could be motivated to move to here by the affordable cost of living. Providence, Rhode Island has done this with great success.
10: theClubhou.se Core Values are: Risk Boldly, Honor Your Commitments, Be Worthy of Trust, Give More Than You Take, and Share Solutions. Which core value do you best exemplify and why?
I would probably say honor your commitments simply because when I decide on a project I try to be as diligent and as selfless as I can in staying true to the reason why it needs to be created.
11: How has being a member of theClubhou.se helped your endeavors?
As an artist that works with different materials, the access to technology afforded me by theClubhou.se has allowed me to have a clearer voice and be more ambitious with how I use it. If I needed to cut out a thousand lemmings as a way to make a political statement, I have access to the technology to do that.
